July 13 - Alnwick Castle

Rabbies tour of Alnwick Castle and the Scottish Borders

Today was our Rabbies tour of Alnwick Castle and the Scottish Borders. We walked over to the Edinburgh Bus Station for our 8:45 departure. A lovely ride through the countryside once we left Edinburgh. Our driver had many interesting facts about our journey.

Our first stop was Kelso which had an old Abbey in ruins. The Greggs in town had coffee. We walked around a bit, then back to the bus. Then the bus rolled along the countryside down across the Scottish Borders. We crossed the River Tweed. Continued on to Alnwick Castle, which is a proper castle according to our guide. We had three hours at the castle. First we got lunch, then explored. Visited the gardens which were nice, then back to the castle’s state rooms which were impressive. There was a whole huge hallway that held China behind plexiglass. The library was very nice. They just recently had restored it. The Percy family lives in the castle from October to May. They live off of the grounds during the tourist months.

There was Harry Potter broomstick training on the grounds which was cute to see. The Fusiliers have a small museum. I asked about the kitchen, and the last time it was used was years ago when they served 9,000 people in a week for a festival.

Back on the bus and we headed to Dunbar for a break. We walked down to the water but did not put our toes in.

We were back on George's street and a quick walk to the Destiny. Heated up supper and watched the men's final at Wimbledon and packed.
